President Donald Trump on Wednesday reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to maintaining a strong military presence in Poland, following a warm meeting at the White House with Poland’s newly elected president, Karol Nawrocki. Trump, who made headlines earlier this year by endorsing Nawrocki during Poland’s presidential election, praised the relationship between the two nations, saying, “It’s always been strong—but now it’s better than ever,” according to the Associated Press.

When asked about the future of U.S. troops in Poland, Trump made clear that American forces would remain and could even expand. “We’ll be staying in Poland. We’re very much aligned with Poland,” he said. “We’ll put more there if they want.”

The visit marked Nawrocki’s first trip abroad since taking office last month. A former amateur boxer and historian, Nawrocki was elected with backing from Poland’s conservative Law and Justice party. During his remarks, he thanked Trump for his support and extended greetings to the millions of Polish Americans in the United States. “These relations—for me, for Poland, for Poles—are very important,” Nawrocki said, emphasizing shared values such as independence and democracy.

At a joint press conference following their meeting, Nawrocki said he and Trump discussed the possibility of increasing the U.S. military footprint in Poland. “There were specific discussions regarding this project,” he noted, calling Trump’s security assurances to Poland “a major success.”

Asked about the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Trump responded that Russian President Vladimir Putin would soon need to make a decision. “If we are unhappy about it, you will see things happen,” he said, as reported by The Guardian.

The meeting also included a symbolic moment of military tribute. As Nawrocki arrived at the White House, Trump greeted him with a hearty pat on the shoulder before the two leaders watched a flyover by U.S. Air Force F-16s in a missing man formation. The tribute honored Polish Air Force pilot Maj. Maciej “Slab” Krakowian, who died in a crash on August 28. “Thank you for this gesture,” Nawrocki told Trump.
