Sudan Landslide Wipes Out Village, Killing More Than 1K

A devastating landslide has wiped out an entire village in Sudan’s western Darfur region, killing an estimated 1,000 people in one of the country’s deadliest natural disasters in recent memory.

The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army (SLM-A), a rebel group that controls the area, reported that the landslide struck the village of Tarasin in the Marrah Mountains of Central Darfur on Sunday, following days of heavy rain in late August.

“Initial information indicates the death of all village residents, estimated to be more than one thousand people. Only one person survived,” the group said in a statement, as reported by the Associated Press. The village was “completely leveled to the ground,” it added, urging the United Nations and international aid organizations to assist with recovery efforts.

Footage from local media showed a flattened landscape surrounded by mountain ranges, with people combing through the rubble in search of bodies.

The disaster comes as Sudan continues to suffer from a brutal civil war, which erupted in April 2023 between the country’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Ongoing fighting has made much of the Darfur region, including the Marrah Mountains, largely inaccessible to humanitarian groups due to severe security restrictions.
