Neighbor’s backyard ‘wildlife sanctuary’ cause woman undue stress
DEAR ABBY:
My neighbor — who has always had a bit of an eccentric streak — has recently taken on an unusual backyard project. Instead of growing flowers or vegetables, he’s turned his yard into a sanctuary for rescued wild animals.
At first, I thought it was just an odd hobby and didn’t pay it much mind. But things have escalated. His yard now attracts all kinds of wildlife — raccoons, skunks, and even the occasional coyote. While I genuinely admire his compassion, I’m increasingly concerned about the safety of my family — especially my two small children and our dog, who are terrified whenever they encounter one of these animals near our property.
To make matters worse, my beloved cat has begun behaving strangely. She’ll sit and stare at the wall for long stretches, almost as if she senses something I can’t. I know it may sound silly, but it’s unsettling — especially after reading that animals can be sensitive to changes in their environment.
My mother insists I’m overreacting and should just let it go. But her dismissal only adds to my anxiety. I’m torn between wanting to keep the peace with my neighbor and needing to protect my family — not to mention, wondering if I’m making too much of things.
Should I say something to my neighbor about the wildlife? Am I reading too much into my cat’s behavior? I’m starting to worry that others think I’m losing touch with reality. How do I address these concerns without creating conflict in the neighborhood or within my own family?
