Trump supporters troll Gavin Newsom by sending him ‘two dozen’ 2028 hats

California Gov. Gavin Newsom sounded the alarm Wednesday over what he sees as a threat to democracy, pointing to unsolicited campaign-style merchandise hinting that  President Donald Trump may seek a third term in office.

“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” Newsom said during a Politico forum in Sacramento. “I’ve received two dozen ‘Trump 2028’ hats from his people.”

The audience chuckled at what appeared to be trolling aimed at the Democratic governor, a rumored 2028 presidential contender. Newsom played along briefly but then turned serious.

“Who spends $200 million on a ballroom at their house and then walks away?” he said, suggesting Trump is far from done with politics — a comment that drew more laughter from the crowd.

But Newsom quickly shifted tone. “This is serious, guys, this is serious,” he said, scolding the audience. “This guy doesn’t believe in free, fair elections. He tried to wreck this country. Were you there on January 6?”

It remains unclear whether the hats are being sent directly by Trump’s team or enthusiastic supporters. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Trump is known to keep a stockpile of campaign merchandise, including “Trump 2028” and “4 More Years” hats, in a room near the Oval Office that previously served as a private study.

The former president reportedly enjoys showing the stash to guests, including foreign dignitaries. During a recent visit from Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Trump pointed to the gear and said, “This drives them crazy.”

“You know, you’re not allowed to run [for a third term],” he added. “But I’m 28 points ahead of anyone. Everyone wants me to run.”
