Fugitive arrested for allegedly shooting neighbor holding funeral for family guinea pig
A Texas man was arrested more than a month after allegedly shooting a teenager during a backyard funeral for a family guinea pig in Houston.
John Martin Dixon, 46, was taken into custody on August 25 in connection with the July 17 shooting of 18-year-old Emmanuel Menchaca. The teen was reportedly holding a small memorial for the pet when a dispute with Dixon escalated into violence.
According to Menchaca’s family, the confrontation took place in the middle of the night, though the exact cause of the argument remains unclear. During the altercation, Dixon allegedly pulled a gun and shot Menchaca in the torso in front of his younger brother, Evan.

Menchaca was rushed to the hospital and spent 17 days in the intensive care unit. His mother described his condition as critical and said he faces a long recovery. “My children should’ve never gone through what they did,” she told ABC 13. “We’re here today to seek justice. Why did this happen?”
Police responded to the scene the night of the shooting, seized Dixon’s firearm, and interviewed his father. The following day, Menchaca identified Dixon as the shooter from a photo lineup, according to court records. However, Dixon was not immediately arrested.

Charges were officially filed on August 8, but Dixon failed to appear in court three days later. He was then added to Texas’ Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitives list, with authorities offering a $3,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. The poster warned that he was considered “armed and dangerous.”
Dixon, who has prior convictions for evading arrest and marijuana possession, now faces two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting. Menchaca’s mother said she hopes prosecutors pursue more serious charges, given the trauma inflicted on her family.
The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation. “We may never know what triggered the violence, but we’re continuing to look into it,” said Harris County District Attorney Sam Teare. “If we can determine a motive, the charges could potentially be upgraded.”
Dixon is currently being held in the Harris County jail and is scheduled to appear in court in October.
