Trump Threatens ABC, NBC
President Donald Trump launched a series of late-night social media posts criticizing ABC and NBC, accusing the networks of political bias and suggesting their broadcast licenses should be revoked.
Trump alleged that both networks act as “an arm of the Democratic Party” and claimed they pose “an actual threat to our Democracy” due to what he called biased and untruthful reporting. “According to many,” he wrote, “they should have their licenses revoked by the FCC. I would be totally in favor of that.”
While the president does not have the authority to revoke broadcast licenses—a power held by the Federal Communications Commission—Trump proposed that the networks should at least be required to pay significantly more to use public airwaves. He suggested fees in the millions of dollars annually, an idea previously supported by Elon Musk, according to Forbes.
Trump notably excluded CBS from his criticism. As The Hill reports, FCC Chair Brendan Carr recently praised CBS’s parent company, Paramount, for pledging to present a broader range of editorial viewpoints at CBS News. Paramount also reached a settlement with Trump over 60 Minutes coverage.
In the same posts, Trump claimed he currently holds his highest-ever poll numbers, despite what he called “fake news” reporting. However, Axios notes this is inaccurate: a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll placed his approval rating at 40%, marking the lowest point of his second term.
