Neo-Nazi Sent to Women’s Prison After ‘Changing’ Gender

A convicted neo-Nazi in Germany is set to serve an 18-month sentence in a women’s prison after registering a legal change of gender under a recently introduced policy intended to support transgender and non-binary individuals.

Sven Liebich, a known far-Right extremist, will be incarcerated at the Chemnitz women’s prison in Saxony, according to Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). Liebich, who has been photographed wearing Nazi-style uniforms and participating in extremist rallies, was convicted in July 2023 for offences including slander and incitement to hatred. His final appeal was dismissed earlier this year.

Authorities confirmed that the decision to place Liebich in a women’s facility was based on his legally registered gender, not biological sex. However, Dennis Cernota, a senior prosecutor in Saxony, said Liebich will undergo an assessment upon arrival to determine whether placement in a women’s prison is appropriate. He could be transferred if deemed a risk to other inmates or the institution.

Liebich legally changed his gender and name under reforms passed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government, which simplified the process of updating personal identification documents for transgender, intersex, and non-binary individuals. The legislation allows individuals to change their gender and name through a self-declaration process, without requiring medical or legal review, though changes are restricted to once per year.

The policy has sparked controversy after it was used by Liebich, who now goes by the name Marla-Svenja on official records. In public appearances, Liebich has been seen wearing women’s clothing and retaining a moustache, according to recent FAZ reports. He has stated that the gender change and prison placement request were made to avoid discrimination by male inmates.

Germany’s domestic intelligence agency in Saxony classifies Liebich as a “Right-wing extremist” with influence both statewide and nationally. He has been seen wearing a Nazi-style armband labeled “Sicherheits-Abteilung” (Security Division), using the acronym “SA” associated with the Nazi stormtroopers, and participating in demonstrations featuring black-clad protesters and imperial-era flags.

Earlier this year, officials clarified that while civil law recognizes Liebich’s gender change, the penal system still regards him as male in legal terms. “The physical legal person remains. A change in the civil status law is of secondary importance,” one official said.

Chancellor Scholz defended the gender reform law as a step toward greater inclusivity. “We show respect to trans, intersex and non-binary people, without taking anything away from others,” he said. “This is how we continue to drive the modernisation of our country.”
