Japan ‘bear attack’ victim, 93, was actually murdered, son arrested in shocking twist

Japanese police have arrested a 51-year-old man for allegedly murdering his elderly father, after initially believing the victim had been killed in a bear attack.

According to multiple reports, 93-year-old Fujiyosh Shindo was found bleeding and unresponsive by his wife at their home in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan, on Monday. The severity of his injuries first led authorities to suspect a bear attack — a growing concern in the region due to increased bear sightings near residential areas.

In response to the incident, local authorities even issued bear attack alerts to residents. However, the narrative quickly shifted when investigators realized Shindo’s injuries were more consistent with stab wounds than with a wild animal attack.

Police arrested the victim’s son, Fujiyuki Shindo, on Wednesday on suspicion of murder. He lived in the same home and initially claimed he had not noticed anything unusual at the time of his father’s apparent attack, according to Kyodo News.

Investigators now believe the younger Shindo used a knife to slash his father on the face and back. Several knives were recovered from the home as potential evidence, though authorities have yet to determine the exact weapon or a possible motive.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The case remains under investigation.

Bear encounters have become an increasing problem in Japan, with 219 reported attacks and six deaths in the year leading up to March 2024, according to Japan’s Environment Ministry. Experts link the rise in bear activity to an aging population and the abandonment of farmland, which has pushed wildlife closer to human settlements.
