Chinese Communist Party has higher approval rating than Trump among Canadians

A recent Gallup poll reveals that more Canadians approve of the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership than of former U.S. President Donald Trump, while Russian President Vladimir Putin remains broadly unpopular.

The survey asked Canadians whether they approved or disapproved of the leadership of various global powers. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) received a 23% approval rating, compared to just 15% for the United States. Negative views were more common across the board, with 64% disapproving of the CCP and 79% disapproving of U.S. leadership.

Putin received the lowest marks, with only 9% approving of the Kremlin and 82% disapproving. Despite these low numbers, the gap in disapproval between Putin and Trump was narrower than expected.

The poll also showed a shift in Canadian attitudes over time. Since 2024, approval of the CCP has risen by eight percentage points, though it remains seven points below its 2018 peak. Approval of U.S. leadership, on the other hand, has declined, returning to the lower levels seen between 2016 and 2020.

Domestically, Canadians’ approval of their own federal leadership has risen significantly. Under new Prime Minister Mark Carney, 59% of respondents expressed support—a 19-point increase from the previous year. In contrast, former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval rating fell from 64% to 40% during his time in office.
