Wild video shows mountain lion strolling into California home, coming face-to-face with man inside: ‘Locked eyes’
A California man had a heart-stopping encounter over the weekend when a mountain lion strolled straight through the front door of his mother’s home—like it owned the place.
Jeff Tenney was in the kitchen of the La Verne residence, in Los Angeles County, on Saturday afternoon when he suddenly found himself face-to-face with the unexpected visitor.
“Out of the corner of my eye, I hear and see and feel the large presence,” Tenney told KABC. “I peeked around the corner of the dining room, and we locked eyes for a moment, and I knew it was a lion.”
The wild animal had entered through an open front door and wasted no time bolting out the back once it noticed Tenney. “As soon as it saw me, it went straight through the screen here, out the back. It was a loud, loud noise—boom! And into the pool and over the fence,” he recalled.
Despite the wild intrusion, Tenney said his concern was more for his 13-year-old dog, Bandit, who had been lounging in the front yard.
“I wasn’t scared. I was mostly thinking about my dog,” he said. “He was napping right here on the lawn. By the time I came out, he was up and kind of sniffing around like he caught a scent—but he never saw the mountain lion.”
Remarkably, Bandit remained completely unaware of how close the big cat had passed by him.
The only casualty of the encounter? A backyard pool float, which the mountain lion punctured during its frantic escape.
Mountain lion sightings are rare in La Verne, making this incident all the more startling—especially since several children’s parties were happening nearby at the time.
Tenney shared footage from a Ring camera to warn neighbors. “There were lots of kids running around that day, lots of parties going on, so we wanted to make sure we had the footage and could alert the community,” he said.
