Cargo Ship Explodes in Baltimore Harbor in Maryland (VIDEO)
A cargo ship explosion in Baltimore Harbor sent a massive fireball into the sky Monday evening, startling nearby residents and prompting a swift emergency response.
Dramatic footage posted on social media captured the moment of the explosion, showing flames erupting from the vessel. The cause of the blast remains under investigation, and no injuries have been reported.
According to Fox 5 DC, the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) responded to reports of an explosion aboard a commercial ship in the Patapsco River, near the site of the former Key Bridge. Fire crews arrived by land and water, including fireboats.
Upon arrival, firefighters found the vessel — identified as the W-Sapphire, a 751-foot bulk carrier — with visible damage consistent with fire and explosion. Despite the severity of the incident, the ship remained afloat and was assisted by tugboats.
All 23 crew members were accounted for and unharmed, according to officials.
Fireboats stayed on scene as the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion. The vessel will be relocated to a designated anchorage area and held there pending clearance from the Coast Guard.
