NJ Parents Face Jail, Fines for Kids’ Crimes
In a move aimed at curbing juvenile crime, Gloucester Township in New Jersey is now holding parents legally responsible for crimes committed by their children under 18—regardless of whether the parents were aware of the behavior.
Under the new ordinance, parents can face up to 90 days in jail or be fined up to $2,000 if they fail to prevent their child from engaging in criminal activity. The township has listed 28 offenses—including felonies, disorderly conduct, gambling, associating with known criminals, and loitering—that could result in penalties for parents. Repeat offenses by a child could lead to harsher consequences for guardians.
A Response to Public Disorder
This legislation follows a violent incident in 2024 at a community drone show in South Jersey, where a crowd of around 500—mostly teenagers and young adults—descended into chaos. According to NJ.com, multiple fights broke out, leading to 11 arrests, nine of whom were teenagers aged 13 to 17. Three police officers were injured in the melee.
“Lawlessness by unsupervised juveniles ruined a family-oriented event that’s supported local scholarships for over 40 years,” said Gloucester Township Police Chief David Harkins. “This kind of behavior will not be tolerated and does not reflect our community.”
The disturbance began around 8:40 p.m. when groups of young people began running recklessly through crowds of families. The situation mirrored other recent outbreaks of teen violence across New Jersey, including a stabbing during Memorial Day weekend in Cape May.
The New Jersey Police Benevolent Association (PBA) voiced support for the new approach, stating, “Out-of-control juveniles with no accountability is not limited to the Jersey Shore. Officers were injured, and the event was canceled. Things must change.”
Chief Harkins expressed gratitude that the situation didn’t escalate further. “I’m proud of our officers who responded with professionalism. I’m thankful no one suffered more serious injuries—officers, families, or even those involved in the violence.”
