Over the last couple of months, my husband, “Adam,” has been engaging in a revolting behavior and I am at my wits’ end about how to get him to quit it. Early in December, I began to notice a strong smell of urine in the bathroom whenever I would get into the shower right after Adam finished his (I have long hair that I wash every day, so it’s easier if he showers first). I kept checking the toilet to see if he’d used it and forgotten to flush, but never found anything, nor did I find any areas on the floor where he’d missed. Finally, I told him about the smell and asked if he’d noticed it or had any idea where it was coming from. And he nonchalantly replied that there was nothing to worry about—the smell was just from him urinating in the shower because it was “easier than getting out.”
I was sickened and furious and responded that what he was doing wasn’t just gross and rude. It also resulted in my unknowingly being made to stand in an area with human waste on it. He tried to excuse it by saying he’d rinsed the tub down thoroughly, using the water at maximum heat to “sterilize” it, and that he wouldn’t care if I peed in there myself. I said I had enough sense to use the toilet like anyone else who grew up with indoor plumbing and that I wanted him to stop doing this. He assured me he would, but I still find myself smelling piss when I go into the shower after he finishes. I confronted him about it, and he claimed the smell was there because he had “just used” the toilet after getting out of the shower. But now that I know to look, I’m finding splatter spots from urine in the shower periodically, so I know it’s still happening. I’ve taken to spraying down the tub with cleaner before I shower every day and I’m sick of it. To complicate matters, we are expecting a baby in July. The last thing I need is to have to worry about sanitizing the shower every day because my husband is too damn lazy to use the toilet like a normal human. Obviously, I can’t supervise him when he’s in there to make sure he doesn’t let loose. How the hell do I put a stop to this?
