Florida man arrested for flushing ex-girlfriend’s fish down toilet, other destructive acts

A Cape Coral man was arrested after he reportedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s home and attacked her early Saturday morning. Bret Dahl, 28, smashed the woman’s beta fish tank and flushed her pet fish down the toilet during a spree of destruction at the residence, according to the Cape Coral Police Department.

Police responded to the scene in the area of 2430 SW 5th Terrace. The victim told officers that she was sleeping at around 2:30 a.m. when Dahl, her former boyfriend of over six months, broke into her home through a back window. She said he threw a picture frame at her and demanded she tell him where to find his gun.

According to the arrest report, the woman said she was confused and tried to get Dahl to leave. He refused and pushed her into the closet door. Dahl then began to damage everything in sight on the kitchen counter and reportedly shattered the woman’s beta fish tank. The woman told police she heard Dahl flush the toilet, and never saw her pet fish “Bean” ever again.

On his way out of the home, Dahl’s fit of rage continued. He swiped the woman’s iPhone and smashed the front left headlight and a window of her vehicle. Dahl left the scene in a friend’s vehicle.

The victim ran to her brother’s home to call 911. Later in the day on Saturday, Cape Coral police saw Dahl get into a friend’s vehicle and were able to pull them over on Skyline Boulevard, CCPD said.

Dahl faces the following charges:

  • Grand theft
  • Burglary
  • Property damage — criminal mischief
  • Obstructing justice
  • Animal cruelty

The total damage to the woman’s property was approximately $3,370
