Dear Mr. Fixit: Vermiculite in Attic

Dear Mr. Fixit:

I’ve read a few other threads here about vermiculite, and am now dealing with our own panic. Last week, we realized that our attic has vermiculite in it and that it was a concern. We also saw that the bathroom fan (which vents and also blows warm air to hear) is vented directly in to the attic, and the attic has a pull-down door, which I realize does not seal the opening. The fan in the attic is several feet from the pull-down opening, but who knows how far these asbestos fibers float. In fact, I suppose it is possible that even opening the bathroom door would send a draft upward through the bathroom fan and disturb the vermiculite in the attic. So, it would seem that for about 30 years, we’ve been using a bathroom fan that put us at risk every day it was turned on, especially for heat in the winter. We have an asbestos removal company coming out this week, we will be sending samples off to see if they are the Zonolite brand that is the one to be concerned about (attic was finished insulated in late fall 1990, so we might be at the tail end of the Zonolite product use), and I’m setting up a doctor’s appt this week to go over this concern. I am sick with anxiety about this. Just putting this out there as a warning – people, check your attic and be aware!

Signed; Panic in the attic
