WATCH:VIDEO: NYC Gunman Shoots College Student Who Bumped Into Him At Deli

Queens, NY – Police have arrested the gunman who shot a former Flushing High School star football player in front of a deli in Queens on Monday afternoon.

Police said the incident occurred after 20-year-old Malachi Capers bumped into 27-year-old Jeffrey Thurston inside the 136 Deli & Grill on Springfield Avenue, the New York Post reported.

Security video from inside the bodega captured the moment that Capers’ right arm bumped into Thurston’s arm and knocked a cell phone out of his hand.

The video showed Thurston turned and punched Capers in the shoulder and then bent to retrieve his phone from the floor of the deli.

Capers turned back and faced Thurston and said something, although there was no audio of the altercation available.

The video showed Thurston slugged Capers in the face, then turned and fled.

Capers chased Thurston out of the bodega and tackled him on the sidewalk in front of the deli, the video showed.

Surveillance video caught the moment after they were up off the ground when Thurston approached Capers and pulled out a gun.

Thurston fired one round that struck Capers in the abdomen, and then video showed he walked away down the sidewalk.

Capers, a psychology major at State University of New York (SUNY) – Buffalo, was transported to the hospital where he remained in critical condition, the New York Post reported.

He played football in 2018, his freshman year, and the head football coach sent him well wishes, WABC reported.

“Malachi was a well-liked member of our football family during his freshman year in 2018 and has remained a friend to many in our program as he has continued his education at Buffalo State after leaving the team due to on-going injury issues,” Buffalo State Head Coach Christian Ozolins said in a statement. “We have him in our thoughts as we wish for a speedy and full recovery.”

Police quickly identified the shooter as Thurston and said it was not the suspect’s first time in trouble.

Thurston has had four prior arrests for burglary, criminal mischief, and felony assault, the New York Post reported.

Police released a video of the shooting on social media on Tuesday and asked the public for help in locating the gunman.

New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Detective Rodney Harrison tweeted out his congratulation after the arrest was made the next day.

“Great investigative work done by the 105 Precinct Detective Squad, Queens South Homicide, Sergeant Castle, Detective Covatti & the rest of Team Castle from Regional Fugitive Task Force for apprehending Jeffrey Thurston in less than 48 hours,” Chief Harrison tweeted.
