Boston protesters rally against Liberty Mutual’s ‘Liberty Biberty’ mascot

Protests erupted outside Berkeley Street in Boston, home to the insurance company Liberty Mutual, as people held handmade signs and megaphones and chanted for the company to get rid of the mascot, “Liberty Biberty.”

“This is to take down Liberty Biberty here at Liberty Mutual’s headquarters,” 19-year-old protest organizer Connor Harvey yelled, according to WBZ. “We’re done. It’s over. We’re getting rid of him, and we have to make our voices heard.”

Harvey’s anger over “Liberty Biberty” started with him expressing his distaste for social media, specifically by posting a video on his YouTube Channel titled “Death of Mascots.” In the video, he jokingly told people to protest outside the company’s headquarters in Boston, but it garnered tens of thousands of views, per the Boston Globe. As a result, he posted a follow-up video, announcing an official date for the protest, which then got 600,000 views. He told people to bring their friends and make signs to get their message across.

During the protests, cars honked their horns in support, the outlet added, with Harvey also live-streaming it on his YouTube page.

“The insurance world has a lot of mascots,” protester Hunter Crossman said, per The Boston Globe. “State Farm’s got Jake, there’s the Geico Gecko. That’s a classic, and Liberty’s just kind of clawing, grasping at straws, trying to find something.”

The ads with this mascot began this summer and certainly have people talking. Even John Oliver talked about it earlier this month during an episode of Last Week Tonight, expressing his outrage.
