Bill Cosby Faces Asset Seizure as More Than Million Judgment Remains Unpaid

Bill Cosby could soon face the seizure of his assets after a court issued legal paperwork allowing efforts to collect on a civil judgment that now exceeds $62 million, including interest and fees.

Court documents show that a writ of execution has been issued against the former comedian and television star. The legal action gives creditors the ability to pursue collection efforts by identifying and potentially seizing non-exempt assets, bank accounts or other property to help satisfy an unpaid judgment.

The action stems from a civil case brought by Donna Motsinger, a former waitress who accused Cosby of sexually assaulting her in 1972. Earlier this year, a jury found in her favor and awarded more than $59 million in damages. According to court records, additional interest and fees have pushed the amount owed to more than $62 million.

Cosby, once one of the most recognizable figures in American television, has denied allegations made against him. However, his efforts to overturn the verdict suffered a setback in May when a Los Angeles judge denied his request for a new trial, allowing the judgment to stand.

The issuance of the writ marks a significant development in the case because it moves the dispute beyond the courtroom and into the collection phase. In civil cases, a writ of execution is commonly used when a judgment debtor fails to voluntarily satisfy a court-ordered payment. It allows creditors to seek enforcement through the legal system and can result in the seizure and sale of certain assets.

The latest court action comes amid reports that Cosby is experiencing serious health challenges. Legal filings submitted by his attorney state that the 89-year-old is legally blind and suffers from a number of age-related medical conditions, including significant mobility problems.

Those health concerns became an issue earlier this year when Cosby was scheduled to sit for a deposition. According to court documents, his attorney argued that his disabilities and medical limitations made it impossible for him to participate on the scheduled dates. The filings also stated that Cosby requires assistance with daily activities and relies on a full-time aide to help ensure his safety.

Once celebrated as “America’s Dad” for his starring role on television, Cosby has largely remained out of public view in recent years as he continues to face legal battles stemming from decades-old allegations. Now, with the judgment still unpaid and enforcement efforts moving forward, attention is turning to what assets may be available for collection and whether the multimillion-dollar award can ultimately be recovered.

The latest filing represents another major legal setback for Cosby and underscores the continuing fallout from allegations that have reshaped his public legacy and generated years of courtroom battles.
