Runaway Zebra Becomes Internet Star Before Dramatic Helicopter Capture

A runaway pet zebra that turned a Tennessee community upside down has finally been caught after spending more than a week on the loose, dodging authorities, disrupting traffic and becoming an unlikely internet celebrity.

The zebra, known as Ed, escaped shortly after arriving at his owner’s property in Rutherford County. Within days, motorists were doing double takes as the striped fugitive was spotted galloping near Interstate 24, forcing authorities to temporarily shut down portions of the highway for safety.

After disappearing into wooded areas and fields, Ed repeatedly managed to avoid capture despite numerous sightings. Residents reported seeing the animal roaming through neighborhoods, while social media users across the country followed his adventures with growing amusement.

As the search dragged on, the zebra’s exploits inspired a flood of online jokes and memes. Images circulated depicting Ed enjoying local attractions, grabbing a meal at Waffle House and exploring various parts of Tennessee. The animal’s unexpected freedom tour transformed him from an escaped pet into a full-blown internet sensation.

The chase finally came to an end when aviation crews located Ed in a pasture near a subdivision. Rather than attempting another ground pursuit, authorities opted for a more dramatic solution.

Video released by officials showed the zebra secured in a net and lifted into the air by a helicopter before being transported to a waiting trailer. The unusual operation safely returned the animal to its owner and brought an end to one of the strangest animal manhunts of the year.

In a news cycle often dominated by politics, crime and economic concerns, Ed’s weeklong bid for freedom provided a rare moment of shared amusement. For a brief time, a wandering zebra managed to capture the attention of thousands of people who found themselves rooting for a striped escape artist with a knack for staying one step ahead of the law
