Florida woman accused of shooting manager after being caught sleeping inside storage unit

A woman accused of shooting a storage facility manager after being told she could not sleep inside a storage unit was arrested Saturday.

Deputies with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office say Kandice Jo Pierce was taken into custody without incident by Palm Bay police in front of a business on Palm Bay Road, Sheriff Wayne Ivey said in an update Saturday night.

The shooting happened shortly after 10 a.m. at a Public Storage facility on Babcock Street, just north of Palm Bay Road, per BCSO.

According to Ivey, the facility manager was making rounds when she discovered two women sleeping inside a storage unit. The manager told them they could not sleep there and needed to leave.

One of the women, who had recently rented the unit, then fired two shots at the manager, striking her once, Ivey said.

The manager sought cover and barricaded herself as the two women left the area. The sheriff said the manager was expected to survive and described her injuries as nonlethal.

“Thankfully, the manager is gonna survive,” Ivey said in a preliminary update on Facebook. “The gunshot wound was not lethal.”

Investigators later identified Pierce as the alleged shooter. According to the sheriff’s office, detectives needed to locate the second woman who was inside the unit to determine which of them had the firearm.

Before her arrest, Pierce was being sought on a warrant for arson in an unrelated case. Investigators were also working with the State Attorney’s Office to finalize a warrant charging her with attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting.

Ivey thanked the community for providing assistance and Palm Bay police for safely taking Pierce into custody.

Kandice was booked into the Brevard County Jail for 2nd Degree Arson, Shooting into a building, and 1st Degree Premeditated Murder, according to court records.

The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response, with deputies and officers from Palm Bay and West Melbourne assisting in establishing a perimeter around the area.
