Houston woman gets 40 years for hiring hitman to kill her ex-girlfriend’s family
Alexus Chenelle Williams pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 2021 killings of a southwest Houston couple and their 6-year-old daughter.
Williams, 33, pleaded guilty to two capital murder charges and one charge of capital murder of a person younger than 10. The 40-year sentence will be served concurrently. A charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon against Williams was dismissed.
A victim impact hearing will be held Friday.
The plea and sentencing come after Xavier Davis, the man accused of carrying out the shootings, pleaded guilty to capital murder in March and was sentenced to death in April.
The 2021 killings
Prosecutors previously said Williams hired Davis, a former high school friend, to kill her ex-girlfriend, 29-year-old Donyavia Lagway, after Lagway ended their affair and reconciled with her husband, 35-year-old Gregory Carhee.
Davis admitted to killing Lagway, Carhee, and the couple’s daughter, 6-year-old Harmony Carhee, inside their apartment at the Totoro Place Apartments on Fondren Road near West Airport Boulevard on June 30, 2021.
Prosecutors said Williams wanted the entire family killed and told Davis he could keep any money he found inside the apartment.
Investigators said Williams may have watched the killings, or their immediate aftermath, on FaceTime. Prosecutors also said Williams attended the victims’ funerals before she was arrested months later.
Two children survived
The couple’s 10-year-old daughter was also shot and critically wounded during the attack, according to prosecutors. She survived by playing dead, then gathered her 1-year-old brother — who prosecutors said Davis threw across the room — and called for help after he left.
The girl’s cousin said the child locked the apartment door, took her little brother and called their grandmother.
The couple’s 8-year-old son was not home during the shooting. Family members said Lagway had recently learned she was pregnant with her fifth child when she was killed.
Investigation details
Prosecutors said investigators spent months examining text messages and encrypted data from Williams’ phone. They said messages between Williams and Davis from the day of the killings helped build the case against her.
Davis was identified as the shooter after an anonymous tip the morning after the killings, according to prosecutors. They said he carjacked someone at gunpoint to get a getaway vehicle, later burned that vehicle, and was found with $3,000 in cash and bullets matching the type recovered from the victims.
The gun prosecutors said was used in the killings was later found at Davis’ girlfriend’s apartment.
