Al Roker Explains Sudden Exit From Today After Viewers Grow Concerned

Al Roker left Today earlier than usual after delivering several weather reports, briefly leaving viewers wondering whether something was wrong with the longtime NBC meteorologist.

Roker, 72, appeared during the early part of the broadcast before Dylan Dreyer stepped in to handle the weather duties for the remainder of the show.

“We have Dylan taking over for Al, who had to leave a little bit early,” Savannah Guthrie told viewers, without immediately offering further details.

Dreyer kept the mood light, calling it “a little switcheroo again this morning.”

Later, during the 3rd Hour of Today, Craig Melvin also addressed Roker’s absence, saying his co-host “had to step out for just a little bit” and adding that he would be back the next day. Sports reporter Kaylee Hartung helped fill in during the broadcast.

Because Roker has had serious health issues in the past, including a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2020, the unexplained exit sparked concern among some viewers. But Roker later cleared up the mystery himself.

In a post on Instagram, Roker revealed that he had left the show early for jury duty.

“Hey now!!! All rise!! Time for #juryduty,” he wrote, sharing a clip of himself outside a courthouse.

“Well, got out of the Today show early because I’ve got jury duty,” Roker told followers. “It’s everybody’s civic duty to do the duty.”

Then, in classic Roker fashion, he added: “I said duty twice!”

Roker has been open about making his health a priority since his cancer scare. He was declared cancer-free in 2021 and frequently shares updates about his workouts and wellness routines. In another recent Instagram post, he showed himself getting in a morning workout before going on air, writing, “Let’s get the week started off right” and reminding followers that “something is better than nothing.”

Still, Roker has not lost his taste for on-air comedy. Earlier this month, he shocked his co-hosts by sampling a dog treat live on television. The treat was one of the Girl Scouts’ new Patch Pals snacks, a soft-baked blueberry muffin-flavored dog treat made in partnership with Bark.

Roker pronounced it “not bad,” while Melvin was horrified.

“That is disgusting!” Melvin said. “I can’t believe you just did that. Oh God, you ate dog food!”

Roker brushed it off with another joke.

“I’ve been to the commissary,” he said, before quickly adding that he was kidding and praising the NBC commissary instead.

So, despite the brief mystery, Roker’s disappearance from Today turned out not to be a medical emergency or a behind-the-scenes shakeup. It was simply jury duty: the rare civic obligation powerful enough to pull even Al Roker

away from the weather map.
