Winning a fortune may change a person’s life, but it has not appeared to change the legal troubles surrounding 51-year-old Kentucky Powerball winner James Farthing.

Farthing, who won a record-breaking $167.3 million Powerball jackpot in April 2025, was arrested again early Sunday morning after police found him asleep inside a running vehicle in the parking lot of a Walmart in Georgetown, Kentucky.

According to authorities, officers responded around 4:04 a.m. and discovered Farthing inside a parked Ford Mustang that was still running. Police reported that he appeared intoxicated, allegedly exhibiting bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and difficulty maintaining his balance. Officers also claimed they detected the smell of both alcohol and marijuana. He was subsequently charged with public intoxication.

Farthing reportedly told officers that a woman had driven him to the Walmart parking lot and then left him there. However, investigators later reviewed surveillance footage from the area and allegedly found no evidence supporting that account. According to reports, security video showed Farthing’s Mustang entering the parking lot, but did not show anyone exiting the vehicle before police arrived.

Fifth Arrest Since Lottery Win

The latest arrest marks Farthing’s fifth run-in with law enforcement since his historic lottery victory.

His legal troubles began only days after claiming the Powerball prize, when he was arrested in Pinellas County, Florida, following an altercation at a resort. Authorities charged him with battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest after he allegedly struck and kicked an officer who was attempting to intervene in a dispute.

Nearly a year later, in February 2026, Farthing was arrested on a charge of intimidating a participant in the legal process.

The following month, police arrested him again on allegations of second-degree burglary and marijuana possession. Investigators accused him of entering a Lexington residence and taking approximately $12,000 in cash.

Farthing’s fourth arrest came in July 2026 after a reported domestic violence incident in Scott County, Kentucky. He faced multiple charges, including first-degree strangulation, fourth-degree assault, and other domestic violence-related offenses. According to police, the alleged victim told investigators that an argument following a boating trip escalated when Farthing allegedly placed both hands around her neck and attempted to strangle her.

Currently in Custody

Farthing is currently being held at the Scott County Detention Center in Georgetown as authorities continue to process the latest charge.

His rapid succession of arrests has drawn attention because of how quickly his legal problems mounted after becoming the winner of the largest Powerball jackpot in Kentucky history.
