WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. (AP) — Former “Home Improvement” actor Jonathan Taylor Thomas was arrested after authorities said he interfered with a drunken-driving investigation and allegedly kicked a sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop in Southern California.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said deputies on Sept. 21 encountered a vehicle stopped at an intersection with a green light, blocking traffic in Westlake Village. When deputies approached to determine whether the occupants needed assistance, they observed behavior that led them to suspect the driver was intoxicated and began a DUI investigation.

Authorities said Thomas, whose legal name is Jonathan Taylor Thomas Weiss, was a passenger in the vehicle. Deputies alleged that during field sobriety tests, he repeatedly exited the vehicle and approached officers, interfering with the investigation.

According to the sheriff’s department, deputies attempted to detain Thomas on suspicion of obstruction and public intoxication. During the encounter, he allegedly kicked a deputy in the stomach before being taken into custody.

He was arrested and booked at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station. The driver was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.

Authorities said the case will be submitted to the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of potential charges. As of Wednesday, no formal charges had been announced.

Now 45, Thomas rose to fame in the 1990s as Randy Taylor on the hit sitcom “Home Improvement” and also voiced young Simba in Disney’s “The Lion King.” After leaving acting, he largely stepped away from public life and has made only occasional appearances in the entertainment industry.

Representatives for Thomas did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to published reports.
