If you are planning to travel down Interstate 95 with an active blunt in your hand, common sense suggests you probably shouldn’t test your rental car’s top speed.
Two men learned that lesson the hard way Sunday afternoon when a Flagler County traffic deputy clocked their rental cruising at a brisk 108 mph.
After pulling the vehicle over, the deputy walked up to the window and was immediately greeted by the unmistakable stench of marijuana, paired with the sight of passenger Timothy Wright, 28, casually holding a burnt cigar blunt. Behind the wheel was 27-year-old Ke’Shawree Cooks, who explained the speedy ride was a rental.
When asked for his ID, Wright claimed he didn’t have one on him. That story unraveled once deputies searched the passenger side and discovered a plastic grocery bag containing a Styrofoam takeout box. Inside the leftovers sat a wallet wrapped in garbage, which held both Wright’s missing ID and a pocketful of weed.
It turned out Wright had carefully concealed the drugs inside his wallet, and then carefully concealed the wallet inside his trash lunch.
The nesting-doll approach to evidence tampering didn’t pan out. Cooks was arrested for excessive speeding over 100 mph, while Wright picked up charges for marijuana possession under 20 grams and tampering with evidence.
Records show this wasn’t Wright’s first encounter with handcuffs, boasting more than 20 prior arrests and 12 felony convictions spanning everything from grand theft to credit card fraud.
Both men were carted off to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where Cooks posted a $500 bond, and Wright bonded out at $3,000.
Sheriff Staly commented on the high-speed blunder.
“One traffic stop led to two arrests,” Staly said. “Don’t be stupid and think you can fly through Flagler County endangering yourself and others on the roadway. That’ll earn you a trip to the Green Roof Inn. I commend our Traffic Unit for keeping our roads safe and looking beyond the stop, which in this case resulted in both occupants going to jail.”
