North Carolina couple allegedly opens fire on family, dies by suicide during police chase
A North Carolina couple who allegedly opened fire at the family members they lived with died after apparently shooting themselves during a police chase. According to deputies involved in the manhunt, suspects Cory Armstrong and Camryn Moore were heard pulling the trigger on themselves after their car swerved and struck a road sign. Moments earlier, the pair had allegedly shot two members of the family they had lived with for a long time.
One of the survivors of the North Carolina shooting was 20-year-old Autumn Setola, who was wounded in the attack and called for help. Setola was reportedly shot in her arms and legs and said she could no longer feel her arms. She used her nose to dial her boyfriend, Jacob Henson, and seek help.
Authorities said Setola and her stepbrother, Keaton, were wounded in the shooting after Armstrong and Moore opened fire with shotguns. The incident took place during the morning of September 10, 2026, inside a Gastonia residence. Police described the shooting as an isolated event and said the suspects knew the family members involved. Authorities have not disclosed the exact relationship between the couple and Setola’s family.
According to Setola’s boyfriend, Jacob Henson, the moment he received her call was frightening. The 20-year-old gave a brief account of what had happened and simply said, “She said, ‘I’ve been shot by Cory.’”
Henson said Setola was shot in both her arms and legs. Her arms were broken, and it was difficult for her to reach for her phone. Setola used her nose to make the call, according to Henson. By the time Henson arrived, Setola had already been taken to the hospital.
The shooting at a home on Forbes Road happened at around 8:51 a.m. The incident was reported after Setola called Henson, who then called 911. Police later revealed that the two victims who died in the gunfire were 50-year-old Victoria Heather Moore and 38-year-old Josiah Bumgardner. They were the mother and uncle, respectively, of Camryn Moore.
According to investigators, Armstrong and Moore were familiar with the victims because they lived in the same house. After the shooting, the couple fled toward southern Ohio. Police chased them for some time before the two apparently shot themselves after their car struck a road sign.
The motive for the shooting remains unknown. Police said the deaths of the suspects were classified as a double suicide and that no deputy fired a weapon.
Henson recalled the desperate call he received from Setola and his efforts to reach her. He explained, “I ran. I had no shoes on. My shirt is backwards. I was driving over there and calling 911 to let them know. I was freaking out. Please let her live. I didn’t know how bad it was.”
Henson said Setola had never told him that Armstrong or Moore had behaved violently at the family’s home. Henson added that even now, they do not really know what happened before the shooting.
In his words, “Autumn talks to me about everything. She never brought up Cory or Camryn being violent at the house. No screaming, yelling or anything. We don’t even know why it happened.” Ever since her hospitalization, Setola has undergone multiple surgeries. Her condition is critical but stable. Her loved ones have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her medical expenses and bills.
