Immigrant who rammed ICE vehicles sentenced to 10 months in prison

Robyn Argote-Brooks, 26, was also ordered to pay nearly $10K in restitution, officials say

SAN ANTONIO – A federal judge sentenced a Cuban man this week after he rammed into multiple government vehicles in the parking lot of a North Side Walmart.

Robyn Argote-Brooks, 26, received 10 months in federal prison Tuesday for damaging an SUV and a sedan that belonged to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Department of Justice said in a news release.

In May, Argote-Brooks was found guilty on two counts of destroying government property by a U.S. District Court Judge. He was also charged with forcibly assaulting a federal officer, which carried up to 20 years in federal prison, but he was acquitted of that charge.

Argote-Brooks was at a Walmart parking lot in the 12600 block of Blanco Road when he was approached by multiple vehicles with ICE agents inside. The January confrontation was caught on video, showing officers confronting Argote-Brooks in the driver’s seat.

Federal authorities previously said officers attempted to make contact with Argote-Brooks after running his license plates and discovering that his parole status — which had allowed him to remain in the United States — was terminated.

Argote-Brooks testified through a translator on May 7 and said he was working for a delivery service and waiting for an order in the Walmart parking lot, watching videos on his phone when several men approached him.

“I told him, ‘I don’t speak English, and that I didn’t understand,’” Argote-Brooks told jurors.

He later told jurors that he became frightened after seeing masked men approach his vehicle.

“I was scared because I see somebody who is coming with a face mask covering his face and asking for my keys,” Argote-Brooks said back in May. “They haven’t identified themselves or told me what I did wrong.”

Argote-Brooks’ arrest affidavit described him turning the vehicle’s ignition, reversing and pulling forward into the ICE vehicle.

He told the jury in May he never intended to hurt anyone.

Argote-Brooks was ordered to pay an additional $9,767 in restitution and a $200 special assessment fee, according to the news release.
