DiJonai Carrington Gets Another Technical Foul Because Apparently the Refs Missed Her
Stop the presses: DiJonai Carrington is upset with the referees again.
Just two games after being ejected for a Flagrant 2 foul against Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham, Carrington found herself in more trouble with officials during the Chicago Sky’s 91-71 loss to the Golden State Valkyries.
With 1:26 remaining in the third quarter, Carrington drove toward the basket and missed a layup. She immediately complained that she had been fouled.
The referees disagreed. Strongly.
Instead of awarding Carrington two free throws, they handed her a technical foul—adding another entry to what is quickly becoming her season-long collection of disagreements with WNBA officials.
The technical compounded an already miserable evening for Carrington, who finished with just three points off the bench as Chicago lost by 20.
The incident came only days after Carrington’s collision with Cunningham generated headlines across the league. Carrington was tossed from that game after officials reviewed the play and upgraded her foul to a Flagrant 2.
She then poured gasoline on the controversy by posting the words “white privilege” on social media from inside the Sky locker room. The remark kicked off an entirely separate political argument because Cunningham has publicly opposed allowing transgender athletes to compete in women’s sports.
Carrington briefly redirected the conversation back toward basketball by delivering a career-best performance in her next appearance.
That peace lasted about one more game.
Against Golden State, she was right back to arguing with the officials, collecting another whistle and giving everyone something to discuss besides Chicago’s 20-point defeat.
Carrington remains capable of making an impact on the court. But if the confrontations continue, she risks becoming better known for her running feud with referees than anything she does with the basketball.
At this point, seeing Carrington complain about a call is becoming about as surprising as seeing a basketball bounce.
