Graham Platner Suspends Senate Campaign as Democratic Party Scrambles for Replacement

Maine’s closely watched U.S. Senate race was thrown into turmoil after Democratic nominee Graham Platner announced he is suspending his campaign and will withdraw from the ballot, just days after a former girlfriend accused him of sexual assault. Platner has repeatedly denied the allegation but acknowledged the controversy had become a distraction that threatened his campaign and the broader Democratic effort.

In a video posted to social media, Platner thanked his supporters and volunteers, saying the movement he built should continue without him as its standard-bearer. While maintaining his innocence, he said, “What comes next needs to come from the people of Maine,” adding that the campaign “can’t be about me anymore.”

The announcement came after leading Democrats, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and several other prominent party figures, urged Platner to step aside following the accusation. Within hours, endorsements evaporated and national Democratic organizations signaled they would no longer support his candidacy if he remained in the race.

Platner’s campaign had already weathered months of controversy, including scrutiny over old social media posts, a tattoo he later removed after criticism that it resembled a Nazi symbol, and allegations from former partners about his past behavior. Despite those setbacks, he captured the Democratic nomination and was viewed as one of the party’s strongest opportunities to challenge Republican Sen. Susan Collins in November.

His withdrawal now leaves Maine Democrats racing against the calendar. Under state law, Platner must formally withdraw in time for the party to nominate a replacement later this month. Several names have already surfaced as possible successors, but party leaders say the selection process will be open and transparent.

The sudden collapse of Platner’s candidacy represents one of the biggest political shakeups of the election cycle and leaves Democrats searching for a new standard-bearer in what had been considered one of the nation’s most competitive Senate races.
