Apartment Building Partially Collapses in Athens; Rescue Crews Search for Survivors

ATHENS, Greece — A quiet neighborhood in Athens turned into a disaster scene after a multi-story apartment building partially collapsed, trapping residents beneath tons of concrete, brick, and twisted steel as firefighters rushed to pull survivors from the wreckage.

The collapse happened in the Petralona district, where stunned neighbors reported hearing what sounded like an explosion before watching part of the aging four-story building crumble into the street. Within minutes, firefighters, police, ambulances, and heavy rescue equipment converged on the scene as frantic residents searched for family members and loved ones.

Rescue crews spent hours carefully removing debris while using specialized listening devices and search dogs in hopes of locating anyone still trapped inside. Nearby apartment buildings were evacuated as engineers assessed whether additional structures might also be at risk.

Authorities have not yet determined exactly what caused the collapse.

Officials say the investigation will examine the building’s structural condition, maintenance history, and whether any recent construction or renovation work may have contributed to the failure.

As news of the collapse spread, social media predictably wasted no time offering its own theories.

One commenter quipped that Greek construction apparently follows the philosophy of, “Looks good from across the street.”

Another joked, “The building was held together by optimism and fresh paint.”

To be fair, investigators have not blamed poor workmanship, and many buildings in Athens date back decades, meaning age, maintenance, or other structural issues could ultimately prove to be the cause.

Still, the incident has renewed concerns about older apartment buildings throughout Greece, many of which were constructed during rapid post-war development booms and now require extensive inspections and repairs.

Emergency crews continued working into the evening, hoping every sound from beneath the rubble would lead to another successful rescue.

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional information about casualties and the cause of the collapse is expected once engineers complete their structural assessment.
