‘Batman’ Leads World’s Most Embarrassing ATM Heist, Internet Has a Field Day
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — Every great robbery movie has a carefully planned escape, a flawless execution, and a crew of seasoned professionals.
Then there’s… whatever this was.
Police in Trinidad and Tobago are searching for four would-be thieves whose spectacularly bungled attempt to steal an ATM has turned them into overnight internet celebrities—for all the wrong reasons.
Security cameras captured the crew arriving in the middle of the night armed with what they apparently believed was the ultimate burglary tool: a stolen backhoe. Their mission seemed simple enough—rip the cash machine from its foundation, load it onto a truck, and disappear before police arrived.
Things did not go according to plan.
Video released by authorities shows the suspects spending more than 10 minutes fumbling around the scene in what quickly evolved from a serious crime into an unintentional slapstick comedy.
The undisputed star of the production was one suspect dressed almost entirely in black. Wearing a ski mask and what appeared to be a dark poncho flapping dramatically in the tropical breeze, the individual bore such a striking resemblance to Batman that social media immediately crowned him the night’s leading man.
Unlike Gotham’s Caped Crusader, however, this “Batman” wasn’t exactly graceful.
At one point, while attempting to direct the operator of the backhoe, the masked suspect tripped over debris and tumbled to the ground—an awkward moment faithfully recorded by the surveillance cameras.
Meanwhile, the expensive construction equipment wasn’t having much luck either.
Police said the backhoe, which had reportedly been stolen from a nearby beach, managed to yank the ATM from its mounting and drag it onto the sidewalk. But before the thieves could celebrate, the machine fought back.
The hydraulic arm on the backhoe broke.
Undeterred, the crew attempted Plan B: manually hoisting the heavy ATM into a waiting pickup truck.
That didn’t work either.
After several increasingly desperate attempts to lift the machine, the group apparently accepted reality, abandoned the cash machine where it sat, and fled the scene in yet another stolen vehicle—leaving behind nothing but damaged equipment, surveillance footage, and their dignity.
Police later recovered the ATM intact.
The internet, however, wasted no time delivering its own verdict.
The surveillance video exploded across social media, spawning countless memes and jokes. Radio talk shows spent the morning roasting the would-be criminals, while one local newspaper couldn’t resist the headline:
“‘Batman’ and Robbin’.”
Authorities continue searching for the suspects, who may have failed to steal any money—but succeeded spectacularly in becoming one of the Caribbean’s funniest viral sensations.
As one online commenter observed:
“The only thing they successfully stole… was about ten minutes of everyone’s entertainment.”
