Missing 16-Foot Giraffe Finally Found After Two-Week Texas Adventure

LEAKEY, Texas — It’s not every day that police ask the public to keep an eye out for a missing giraffe.

Then again, it’s also not every day a 10-foot-tall, 1,200-pound giraffe manages to disappear for nearly two weeks.

That’s exactly what happened after Gracie, a young reticulated giraffe living at Cedar Hollow Ranch in the Texas Hill Country, wandered away from her enclosure and simply… kept walking. Ranch owner Vick Jones believes Gracie accidentally wandered down the wrong side of a gate after exploring a rocky hillside she had never visited before.

Despite helicopters, drones, game cameras, and even a $5,000 reward, Gracie remained missing, leaving many people wondering how an animal the height of a one-story building could seemingly vanish into thin air.

Eventually, the search team got a lucky break.

During an aerial search, Gracie was spotted about four miles from the ranch, peacefully enjoying life near a pond with plenty of trees and vegetation. According to her owner, she appeared healthy, well-fed, and in absolutely no hurry to end her unexpected vacation. In fact, Jones described her as being in good shape and “standing there, swishing her tail.”

Getting her home turned out to be almost as challenging as finding her. Veterinarians planned to sedate Gracie, place a hood over her eyes to keep her calm, and transport her first in an open trailer before transferring her into a specially designed giraffe trailer for the trip back to the ranch.

The story quickly became an internet sensation, prompting thousands of jokes from people amazed that something so enormous could seemingly disappear.

One commenter wrote:

“How do you lose an animal that’s taller than your house?”

Another joked:

“Texas has officially become so big it can misplace a giraffe.”

And perhaps the best observation came from someone who quipped:

“If they can’t find a giraffe, I’m never finding my TV remote.”

Gracie’s owners say they’re now planning to install additional fencing in the rocky area where her adventure began, hoping to prevent any future sightseeing expeditions.

As for Gracie, she appears to have enjoyed her little vacation just fine.

After all, if you’re going to disappear… you might as well do it with your head held high.
