Camper Risks Everything for Sunglasses, Ends Up Needing Rescue from Vault Toilet

SIERRA NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. — Financial experts have long debated whether it’s better to spend money replacing a lost item or attempting to recover it.

One California camper has now provided a rather persuasive argument in favor of buying a new pair.

According to authorities, a man camping in California accidentally dropped his sunglasses into a campground vault toilet. Faced with a difficult decision, he apparently concluded that the logical course of action was not to spend $20 at the nearest sporting goods store.

Instead…

He climbed in.

Officials say the camper attempted to retrieve the sunglasses by lowering himself into the underground waste vault using ropes. Unfortunately, the plan quickly went from “questionable” to “catastrophic” when the improvised rope system failed, leaving him trapped several feet below the restroom with no practical way to escape. At that point, replacing the sunglasses probably began looking like a bargain.

Emergency crews from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, local firefighters, and park personnel responded to the unusual rescue. After carefully removing the unfortunate treasure hunter from the vault, paramedics evaluated him at the scene before transporting him to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Authorities did not say whether the sunglasses survived the ordeal. (upi.com)

Needless to say, social media reacted with the level of maturity we’ve all come to expect.

One commenter wrote:

“Some things are priceless. Those sunglasses weren’t one of them.”

Another observed:

“Congratulations. You spent thousands of dollars in emergency services to save a pair of $29 shades.”

And perhaps the internet’s most practical advice came from someone who suggested:

“The moment your sunglasses hit the bottom of a vault toilet, they no longer belong to you. They belong to history.”

Forest officials took the opportunity to remind campers that vault toilets are extremely dangerous, containing toxic gases and oxygen-deficient environments that can become deadly within minutes. In other words, they’re designed to collect waste—not adventurous bargain hunters.

As for the camper, one hopes he has fully recovered.

One also hopes his next pair of sunglasses comes with a neck strap.
