Woman who served 33 months for theft arrested again with mom after flaunting stolen bags on TikTok

A career criminal and her mother have been arrested for allegedly taking part in a series of high-end retail thefts across Western Washington.

Janeice Downs and her mother, Janeice Wiley, are accused of operating an organized retail theft ring responsible for stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise over several years.

Downs has been charged with first-degree organized retail theft. Both were taken into custody on June 12 at the Westfield Southcenter mall.

Investigators said surveillance footage and social media posts shared by the suspects helped link them to the crimes.

“For us, she is a prolific organized career theft criminal and so, we are very familiar with her,” Bellevue Police Special Enforcement Team Capt. Landon Barnwell said.

Authorities allege that on June 6, Downs and an accomplice stole two Louis Vuitton handbags worth nearly $7,000 from a downtown Seattle store.

Downs later allegedly posted a TikTok video bragging and showing off the handbags. In the video, Wiley is seen holding the stolen bags even as a popular song referencing scamming plays in the background.

Downs allegedly committed the crimes wearing a burqa, which investigators said she also wore during an earlier retail crime spree.

According to police, the suspects distracted store employees at Nordstrom before leaving with the luxury handbags.

In a previous case, Downs pleaded guilty to six counts of organized retail theft connected to a large-scale theft ring targeting Lululemon stores.

Investigators accused Downs and Wiley of stealing nearly $500,000 worth of merchandise. Downs was sentenced to 33 months in prison and received 501 days of credit for time served before being released in January 2026.

“You would think that after what she experienced in 2024 that maybe she would change what she’s doing, but no, she’s incredably ignorant and a thief.

The latest investigation began after Bellevue Detective Jeff Christiansen recognized Downs in a bulletin distributed by Tukwila police regarding the theft of nearly $4,000 worth of fragrances from a Macy’s store. Investigators said a distinctive shower cap worn by one of the suspects resembled one seen in Downs’ previous case.

Working with law enforcement agencies across the region, detectives connected Downs to similar thefts at Macy’s stores in Tacoma and Tukwila, as well as the Seattle Nordstrom handbag theft.

“People don’t just commit crimes in one location, especially when it comes to retail theft-related crimes.” “They bounce around many of the retailers in this entire area.”

When officers arrested Downs at Southcenter mall, investigators said she was wearing the same burqa, black sandals and white-painted toenails seen in security footage from the Nordstrom theft.

Prosecutors asked that Downs remain behind bars. She is currently being held on $215,000 bail, which includes $75,000 tied to a fugitive warrant from Oregon, where authorities have charged her with 16 counts of organized retail theft, aggravated theft and theft.

Wiley was also arrested but later posted $50,000 bail and was released. Her case related to the 2024 Lululemon theft investigation remains pending trial.
