Tennessee Zebra Becomes Internet Celebrity After Week-Long Escape Ends With Helicopter Rescue

CHRISTIANA, Tenn. — Most runaway animals eventually get caught in fairly ordinary ways.

Ed the zebra was not interested in being ordinary.

The striped fugitive spent more than a week roaming central Tennessee after escaping from his owner shortly after arriving at his new home. What began as a missing-animal report quickly evolved into one of the strangest and most entertaining stories of the year.

Residents first spotted the zebra running alongside Interstate 24, causing confusion among motorists who were not expecting to see an African grazing animal sprinting through Tennessee traffic.

Authorities temporarily shut down portions of the highway as deputies attempted to contain the escapee. Their efforts were unsuccessful.

Ed promptly disappeared into nearby woods.

Over the next several days, sightings poured in from across the area. Some residents reported seeing the zebra wandering through fields. Others claimed to have spotted him trotting through neighborhoods as if he had lived there his entire life.

Each new sighting seemed to produce another wave of social media posts, photographs, and jokes.

Before long, Ed had become an internet celebrity.

Memes appeared showing the zebra eating at a Waffle House, visiting various Tennessee landmarks, and generally enjoying what many online observers described as his “summer vacation.”

Meanwhile, authorities continued searching.

Despite the attention, Ed proved remarkably difficult to catch. Search crews used drones, aviation resources, and ground teams as the zebra repeatedly stayed one step ahead of everyone trying to bring him home.

The chase finally came to an end when officials located Ed grazing peacefully in a pasture near a residential subdivision.

But even then, the story took another unexpected turn.

Instead of loading the zebra into a trailer in the traditional manner, rescue crews opted for a dramatic aerial recovery.

Video released by authorities showed Ed safely secured in a large net and being carried beneath a helicopter as he made his final trip home.

The unusual sight instantly generated even more attention online.

Many viewers joked that the zebra looked like a four-legged action-movie star making a grand exit after completing an epic adventure.

Officials confirmed that Ed was returned safely and was unharmed by his week-long escapade.

By the time the dust settled, the runaway zebra had inspired thousands of social media posts, countless jokes, news reports across the country, and enough memes to ensure that his brief taste of freedom would not soon be forgotten.

For one week, a zebra managed to shut down highways, outsmart search teams, dominate social media, and require a helicopter extraction.

Not bad for an animal that was only supposed to be settling into its new home.
