Fans only just realizing what AC/DC stands for after band’s 53-year history
They’re among the most iconic bands globally – but some music fans are only now discovering what AC/DC actually means after 53 years.
Established by brothers Malcolm Young and Angus Young, the Australian rock group‘s present lineup features lead guitarist Angus, bass guitarist Cliff Williams, drummer Phil Rudd, lead vocalist Brian Johnson, and rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, nephew of Angus and Malcolm.
Since 1974, the band has won 17 awards and secured an additional 50 nominations – including Grammy Awards, ARIA Music Awards, iHeartRadio Music Awards, and MTV Video Music Awards (VMA). Yet, it appears some followers remain divided on their musical genre with some categorizing it as hard rock while others classify it as heavy metal or blues rock. It comes after an ABBA star revealed how the hit band came up with their very unusual name.
Among their most celebrated tracks are You Shook Me All Night Long, Back in Black, Thunderstruck, Highway to Hell, It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock ‘n’ Roll), and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.
However, after experiencing AC/DC’s music one day, one dedicated fan began questioning what the band name actually signifies – and posed the question to Reddit users: “What does AC/DC actually stand for?”
While some assume AC/DC represents ‘Anti-Christ/Devil’s Child’, the actual origin story is far removed from ‘the Devil’.
During brainstorming sessions for band names, Malcolm and Angus’s sister, Margaret, noticed the AC/DC symbol on her sewing machine’s AC adapter.
The abbreviation represents alternating current/direct current electricity, which the brothers believed captured their band’s ‘raw energy’.
However, while most Brits and Americans call the band AC/DC, it is commonly known as Acca Dacca in Australia.
Responding to this discovery, one user stated: “I thought it meant Alternate/ Direct Current.”
Another user said: “Angus Can Dance Cool.”
A third user commented: “It’s a play on a theme, and a damned good one if you ask me.”
It comes after The Who fans finally discovered what their band name actually means.
