Mayor Mamdani fires NYC sheriff amid controversy
Anthony Miranda’s time as NYC Sheriff was marked by allegations of mishandling evidence from unlicensed smoke shops. There were also reports of unexplained cash seizures during his tenure. These issues contributed to scrutiny of his leadership.
The New York City Department of Investigation conducted a probe into the Sheriff’s Office. The investigation examined issues including mishandled evidence and unexplained cash seizures under Anthony Miranda’s leadership.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the dismissal of New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda. Miranda had been appointed to the position in 2022 under former Mayor Eric Adams. His removal marks a significant change in the city’s law enforcement leadership.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani appointed Edwin Raymond to serve as the new New York City Sheriff. This appointment follows the dismissal of Anthony Miranda from the role.
Mamdani has prioritized accountability, trust-building, and community-focused public safety in his approach to law enforcement leadership. These principles guided his decision-making in appointing a new sheriff.

Raymond worked for the NYPD for 15 years before retiring in 2023. He also served in the state attorney general’s office as the nation’s first social justice liaison.
“I’m grateful to now be part of Mayor Mamdani’s administration as the City’s new Sheriff,” Raymond said in a statement. “Growing up in East Flatbush as the son of Haitian immigrants, I experienced both the public safety challenges facing working-class communities and the inequities that too often undermine trust in government. Choosing a career in public service was my response to those realities. I look forward to continuing that work as Sheriff by helping build a safer, fairer and more accountable city for all New Yorkers.”
Edwin Raymond has been an advocate for racial justice within policing, promoting equitable treatment and accountability in law enforcement.
