Obama’s Memorial Day message praised after Trump’s ‘disgusting’ post
Former President Barack Obama’s Memorial Day message is being praised after critics slammed President Donald Trump’s for being “vile and embarrassing.”
The former president posted the brief message on X just after 10 a.m. ET to pay tribute to the deceased members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
“On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to the brave men and women in uniform who gave their lives for this country that we love. It is a debt we can never fully repay, but we must never stop trying. I’ll always be grateful to our fallen heroes and their families, whose sacrifice reminds us of what it means to live for something greater than ourselves,” Obama wrote. It comes after a former Trump staffer revealed his 4 chilling predictions for what the president will do next.
X users praised the former president’s message, with some declaring it better than President Trump’s 6. a.m. Memorial Day message, which slammed “Dumocrats.”
“A much better message than what the current president gave,” one user said.
“It’s great to see a President that actually cares about the troops,” an X user wrote.
“Barack Obama carried the presidency with dignity, empathy, and actual respect for the troops instead of treating patriotism like a merchandising opportunity,” another X user wrote.
“I miss having a president who understood service means sacrifice, not self-promotion,” a third user added.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump posted a scathing Memorial Day message on Truth Social early Monday, taking the opportunity to rip into Democrats.
He wished Americans a “happy” Memorial Day, a holiday that is officially about mourning the nation’s fallen service members, before quickly firing into an attack on his political opponents.
“God Bless those that have made the ultimate sacrifice. I love you all! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he added.
The post drew swift backlash from users on X.
“Memorial Day should be about honouring fallen heroes and uniting the nation, not reigniting political divisions or insults,” one user wrote.
“Disgusting. He is no statesman. Just the most vile and embarrassing president this country has ever seen. By a lot,” another commented.
“Does he not realize that there are military folk who are Democrats?? It is HE who is disrespecting the military by being a s— commander in chief,” a second pointed out. “He has lost what little marbles he had. This is a senile old child,” a third declared.
Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May each year, is meant to be a day of reflection and remembrance of those who died while serving in the U.S. military, according to the Congressional Research Service.
The holiday is observed in part by the National Moment of Remembrance, which encourages all Americans to pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence.
The holiday’s origins can be traced to the American Civil War, which killed more than 600,000 service members, Union and Confederate, between 1861 and 1865.
