Putin declares war on aging with billion vaccine project

Russian President Vladimir Putin is backing an ambitious scientific effort aimed at slowing — or even halting — the aging process, with officials describing it as the development of what could become the world’s first anti-aging vaccine.

The initiative is part of a broader national health program funded with more than 2 trillion rubles, roughly 26 billion dollars. The project comes as Russia grapples with a declining population and shorter life expectancy among men. Putin, who is 73, has long shown a strong interest in longevity. In Russia, the average male life expectancy is about 67 years, compared to 76.5 years in the United States.

According to Deputy Minister of Science Denis Sekirinsky, researchers are focusing on a form of gene therapy that targets a biological mechanism known as the RAGE receptor. This receptor is linked to aging at the cellular level. By blocking it, scientists believe they may be able to slow down the aging process or potentially delay it significantly. Sekirinsky said the goal is to create a gene-based treatment specifically designed to interfere with this pathway.

Although the research has shown promise in laboratory settings and animal studies, it has not yet been tested in humans. Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova indicated that Russia hopes to begin producing such a treatment between 2028 and 2030.

Interest in anti-aging science is not limited to Russia. Researchers in the United States and elsewhere are actively studying similar concepts, often referring to them as longevity science or cellular reprogramming rather than framing them as a single vaccine.

Reports suggest the project may have been influenced by Mikhail Kovalchuk, head of the Kurchatov Institute, who has been described by some sources as deeply interested in extending human life. Golikova has suggested that ideas once considered far-fetched are now moving closer to reality.

Putin has also spoken publicly about the potential of biotechnology to extend human life. During a past conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the two discussed advances that could allow people to live significantly longer, possibly even approaching 150 years.

Separately, reports in recent years have highlighted some of Putin’s personal health practices. These include specialized treatments involving deer antlers, along with a disciplined lifestyle that features regular exercise, swimming, judo, ice hockey, and a diet focused on protein, fish, and fresh vegetables.

Some critics have speculated that Putin’s interest in longevity is tied to a desire to remain in power for many years, though such claims remain unproven.
