Pop star Britney Spears has been charged in California with a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence involving both alcohol and drugs, authorities announced Thursday. Prosecutors in Ventura County said she is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, though they have not disclosed which substance they believe was involved.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Spears was taken into custody on the night of March 4 after officers observed her allegedly speeding and driving in an erratic manner. At the time, a representative for Spears described the situation as an unfortunate and inexcusable incident, adding that she would cooperate fully with the legal process.
About a month after her arrest, Spears’ team confirmed that she had chosen to enter a treatment program voluntarily, though no details were provided about the nature of the program. In her 2023 memoir, Spears addressed past speculation about substance use, stating that her drinking had never been out of control and noting that Adderall had been her preferred substance.
Because the charge is a misdemeanor, prosecutors indicated that Spears is not required to attend her arraignment in person.
