A tourist from Germany has died after a snakebite during a performance in Egypt, according to authorities. The 57-year-old man was attending a snake-charming show at a hotel in the Red Sea resort city of Hurghada earlier this month when the incident took a deadly turn, reports say.
Police in Bavaria stated that performers had placed two snakes, believed to be cobras, around the necks of audience members as part of the act. During the demonstration, one of the snakes reportedly slipped down into the man’s pants and bit his leg.
Witnesses said the man quickly showed clear signs of poisoning. Emergency responders were able to revive him at the scene, but he later died after being taken to a nearby hospital.
The victim, who was from the Unterallgaeu district in Bavaria, had been traveling with two relatives. His identity has not been made public. Authorities in Germany have launched an investigation and are waiting for toxicology results to determine more details about the cause of death. Egyptian officials told reporters they were not aware of the incident.
According to global health data, snakebites affect millions of people each year. As many as 138,000 people die annually from venomous bites, while many more suffer serious injuries, including amputations and lasting disabilities.
