Authorities have identified the Chicago police officer killed in a hospital shooting as John Bartholomew, 38, a decade-long member of the force. Officials said he died shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday after being shot inside Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Another officer, a 57-year-old with more than two decades of service, was also struck during the incident and remained in critical condition as of Sunday. Police Superintendent Larry Snelling said the injured officer was “fighting for his life.” Authorities have not publicly released the names of the wounded officer or the suspect.
The officers had brought the suspect—who had been arrested on suspicion of robbery—to the hospital for evaluation. During the visit, the suspect opened fire, then fled the scene. He was later apprehended, and police said a weapon was recovered, though it remains unclear how he obtained the gun.
A surveillance image published by the Chicago Sun-Times appeared to show the suspect running unclothed, with medical electrodes still attached to his chest. In a statement posted on Facebook, the hospital said the individual had been checked for weapons upon arrival in accordance with procedures and was under constant police supervision. Despite those measures, the hospital said the man was able to shoot the officers before leaving the building.
