India has issued a strong response after Donald Trump shared remarks on social media that included a harsh characterization of the country. The language originated from conservative radio host Michael Savage, who criticized U.S. birthright citizenship policies during his program. In his commentary, Savage argued that children born in the United States to immigrant parents from countries such as India and China gain citizenship and can later sponsor extended family members. Trump reposted a transcript of the segment on Truth Social without adding his own commentary.
Officials in New Delhi reacted quickly. A spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry described the remarks as ill-informed, inappropriate, and lacking in good judgment, emphasizing that such language does not reflect the longstanding partnership between the two nations, which is rooted in mutual respect and shared interests. While the official statement avoided naming Trump directly, it addressed what it called a response to media inquiries about a social media post.
Political opposition figures in India were more direct. Members of the Congress party labeled the comments deeply offensive and called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formally raise the issue with Trump.
At the same time, the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi pointed to Trump’s earlier positive remarks about India, where he has described it as a great nation led by a close friend. The situation unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing efforts by Washington and New Delhi to stabilize trade relations following tariff disputes, as well as continuing legal battles over Trump’s push to limit birthright citizenship in the United States.
