Dead squirrels spark health alert at famous Hollywood hiking trail

Visitors to a well-known hiking spot in the Hollywood Hills are being urged to keep their distance from squirrels after multiple reports of animals appearing ill or being found dead along the trails at Runyon Canyon Park.

Park officials say they’ve recently documented squirrels that look sluggish, disoriented, or otherwise unwell, as well as carcasses discovered in the area. Hikers are being asked to notify a ranger right away if they encounter any animals in that condition. The warning, shared through the Friends of Runyon Canyon social media page, stresses that sick wildlife can potentially spread disease to both people and pets..

According to the guidance, warning signs in animals may include unusual behavior such as lack of energy, trouble moving, or erratic actions. Anyone who comes across a dead squirrel is also encouraged to report it, noting the time and exact location if possible.

Officials emphasized that people should not touch any wildlife and should keep dogs leashed and away from the animals to reduce the risk of exposure. Feeding squirrels or other wildlife is discouraged, and visitors are reminded to wash their hands thoroughly after leaving the park.

The situation has fueled speculation online about what might be affecting the squirrels. Some commenters suggested a disease outbreak, while others questioned whether the animals could have been exposed to poison intended for rodents.
