Vance Air Force Base Tornado: Extremely Dangerous Twister Located Near AFB in Enid, Oklahoma
A powerful and highly dangerous tornado was confirmed near Vance Air Force Base on Thursday evening, triggering a tornado emergency for Enid and an urgent alert across central Garfield County.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, the storm was spotted near the base at 8:13 p.m. CDT, moving east at roughly 25 mph. Officials characterized it as a particularly hazardous situation, warning that the tornado posed a serious threat to life and could cause extensive destruction. By about 8:21 p.m., it had swept through the southeastern section of Enid and was advancing toward Fairmont. Although the storm’s rotation showed some signs of weakening, it remained capable of inflicting major damage.
Live reports from the area showed entire homes reduced to rubble as the tornado tore through parts of the city. KOCO Chief Meteorologist Damon Lane described it as a worst-case scenario and among the most intense storms the region has experienced in years, noting the large volume of debris being carried within it. Communities in the storm’s path included Enid, Waukomis, Covington, Breckenridge, Fairmont, and North Enid.
Emergency authorities cautioned that airborne debris could be deadly. Mobile homes were especially vulnerable, and widespread damage to houses, businesses, and vehicles was expected. Residents were advised to seek shelter immediately in basements, storm shelters, or interior rooms on the lowest level of sturdy buildings, staying away from windows.
