Police officer relieved of duty over viral racist social media rant

A Houston police officer has been taken off active duty after a video circulated online showing her making racist and offensive statements.

The Houston Police Department confirmed that Officer Ashley Gonzalez was removed from her position while an internal investigation is underway. The action follows the spread of a social media clip in which she allegedly directs hateful comments toward Black individuals.

In the video, Gonzalez is seen sitting in a car and speaking directly to the camera. During the recording, she reportedly expresses hostility toward Black people and makes remarks suggesting she would treat them differently while responding to calls. The footage, which was widely shared online, also includes her recounting an off-duty incident in which she claimed someone tried to take her wallet. She described confronting that individual and using a racial slur during the encounter.

At one point in the clip, Gonzalez allegedly says she felt satisfaction using the slur and compared the moment to her time in the military. She previously served in the United States Marine Corps from 2019 to 2023 and reached the rank of corporal.

The video also includes comments mocking slavery, discrimination, and racial stereotypes. Gonzalez is heard acknowledging that parts of her remarks were not recorded and suggesting her language had been even more extreme off camera.

The Houston Police Officers’ Union issued a statement criticizing the video, saying it does not support or tolerate racist behavior from officers and expressing concern over the content.

Gonzalez, who joined the department in January 2024, is still officially employed while the investigation continues. She has been required to turn in her badge and firearm and is being monitored at home during this process. Authorities will determine whether she returns to duty or faces permanent dismissal, which would prevent her from being rehired.
