Italian police have arrested a Nigerian migrant after a disturbing incident in a public park where he was discovered killing a cat and attempting to cook it over an improvised grill near a children’s playground.
The event took place on Tuesday afternoon at Parco della Crociata in Sarzana, located in the province of La Spezia, south of Genoa. According to reports, people in the area witnessed the scene and immediately alerted both the Carabinieri and the Polizia di Stato.
When officers arrived, they found the man—reportedly without shoes—cooking the freshly killed cat over an open flame using a makeshift grate. He was taken into custody on the spot and is facing animal cruelty charges. Authorities have not yet determined whether the cat was a stray or belonged to a nearby home.

Images of the incident quickly circulated on Italian social media and were picked up by news outlets, sparking strong public outrage.
Local administrative and security official Stefano Torri condemned the act in a public statement, calling it “an atrocious act that cannot and should not have a place in a civilised society.” He added that anyone living in the country must respect local laws and norms, and said authorities would not tolerate what he described as “uncivilised” behavior in public spaces. Torri also said the municipality plans to increase oversight in the park and restore it for safe public use.
Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also denounced the incident, describing it as a “heinous act” that should not go unpunished, according to reports in Il Secolo XIX.
