A former guitarist from the hardcore band Turnstile is facing an attempted-murder charge after police say he intentionally struck an elderly man with a vehicle outside the man’s Maryland home.
Authorities say Brady Ebert, 33, who previously played guitar for the Grammy-winning band, is accused of hitting 79-year-old William Yates with his car on Sunday. William Yates is the father of Turnstile’s lead singer, Brendan Yates.
According to police, Ebert first drove up to the house while shouting profanities, then left the area before returning again. Family members told investigators that during the confrontation, the older Yates threw a rock at the vehicle and attempted to run away. Police allege that Ebert then struck him with the car. Officers say Ebert later returned to the scene and told the injured man he “deserved it.”
William Yates suffered serious injuries, including severe damage to his leg with bone exposed. He was taken for surgery and is now recovering.
Ebert was arrested Tuesday and charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault. A judge ordered him held without bond. During a court appearance, Ebert argued that surveillance video would prove his innocence, but the judge described the alleged act as both violent and deliberate.
Turnstile, which has won two Grammy Awards, said in a statement that Brendan Yates’ father is recovering from surgery and that the band is hoping for the best outcome for him.
The group also noted that it cut ties with Ebert in 2022, citing what it described as a long history of troubling behavior and escalating threats. According to the band, Ebert continued making public attacks against them in the years that followed. The members said they have “no language left for Brady” and asked for privacy during the situation.
Entertainment attorney John Simson said conflicts within bands can become deeply emotional. He noted that being removed from a group can feel highly personal and sometimes leads to strong reactions.
