Tiger Woods Out on Bail, With Words From Trump
Tiger Woods was released on bail late Friday following a crash in which his Land Rover collided with a truck and flipped onto its side, leading to his arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities reported.
Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods had been driving at “high speeds” on a residential street. After the accident, he showed “signs of impairment,” and investigators suspect he may have taken some form of medication or drug. Budensiek described Woods as lethargic. While Woods consented to a Breathalyzer test that indicated no alcohol consumption, he declined a urine test, prompting his arrest. Florida law required him to spend at least eight hours in custody before posting bail.
Woods was not injured in the incident and was kept separate from other inmates for safety reasons. “He’s not going to be with other inmates that could hurt him or try to capitalize on what he did,” Budensiek said. “He’ll face consequences, but not by being harmed in jail.”
President Trump, whose former daughter-in-law Vanessa Trump is dating Woods, commented on the situation when he arrived in Miami Friday afternoon for an investment summit. “I feel so badly. He’s got some difficulty,” Trump said. “Very close friend of mine. He’s an amazing person. Amazing man. But, some difficulty.” Woods’ management team at Excel Sports did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
This marks Woods’ second DUI arrest unrelated to alcohol. In 2017, he was found asleep behind the wheel after taking a problematic combination of painkillers; the engine was running and the car sustained damage to the driver’s side. He pleaded guilty to reckless driving at that time.
The crash on Friday is also the fourth major vehicle incident involving Woods. In February 2021, his SUV left a coastal road in Los Angeles at high speed, resulting in significant injuries to his legs and ankle. Woods has also suffered multiple injuries to his left knee and back over the course of his golf career.
At 50, Woods has been recovering from his seventh back surgery in September and was preparing to return to competitive golf. His most recent official tournament was the 2024 British Open.
