BREAKING: Second Plane Grounded, Isolated, and Declared a ‘Potential Hijacking Incident’ in Atlanta

Two separate disturbances on U.S. commercial flights prompted law enforcement responses Sunday, including one incident that led to a reported hijacking concern after a plane arrived in Atlanta.

Frontier Airlines Flight 2539, an Airbus A320 traveling from Columbus, Ohio, to Atlanta, landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at approximately 5:09 p.m. After touching down, the aircraft was escorted by emergency vehicles and directed away from regular airport traffic to a remote, inactive runway.

Flight tracking information and video from the airport showed the aircraft remaining isolated on that runway for nearly two hours while authorities responded. Officials later determined that the suspected hijacking threat was not credible. No passengers or crew members were reported injured.

As of Sunday evening, Frontier Airlines, the FBI’s Atlanta field office, and airport officials had not released detailed statements explaining what exactly occurred or whether any charges would be filed. Authorities said the situation remains under investigation.

The Atlanta incident happened only hours after another disruption involving a commercial flight that required a law enforcement response.

Earlier in the day, an American Airlines flight traveling from New York City to Chicago was diverted to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport after a passenger reportedly caused a disturbance on board. Once the aircraft landed, it was moved to a remote section of the airport and surrounded by emergency vehicles.

Video recorded at the airport showed the plane parked away from other traffic with law enforcement officers nearby. Wayne County Airport Authority Police responded to the situation, and agents from the FBI’s Detroit field office were also sent to the scene.

In a statement following the diversion, an FBI Detroit spokesperson confirmed federal agents were present at the airport in Romulus, Michigan.

“I can confirm that personnel from the FBI in Michigan are present at DTW Airport, located in Romulus, Michigan, conducting law enforcement activities. There is no current threat to the public at this time,” the spokesperson said.

American Airlines also confirmed that the flight was diverted because of a disruptive passenger.

“American Airlines flight 2819 diverted to Detroit (DTW) due to a disruptive customer. The aircraft landed safely at DTW where law enforcement and medical personnel met the flight and the customer deplaned. We appreciate our customers for their patience and thank our crew for their professionalism,” the airline said.

Authorities removed the passenger from the aircraft after it arrived. Other travelers were later allowed to leave the plane but were kept in the terminal while officials completed their investigation and cleared the aircraft.

No injuries were reported in connection with the Detroit incident.

As of Sunday evening, neither the FBI nor American Airlines had provided additional details about what caused the disturbance, the identity of the passenger involved, or whether criminal charges would be filed. The circumstances that led to the diversion and the involvement of federal authorities have not yet been fully explained.
